MINUTES OF MAIN MEETING, WEDNESDAY 10th APRIL 2024 at 10 a.m. ST. MARTINS COMMUNITY HALL, EAST LOOE.
On a wet and windy day, Chair, Alison Currah, welcomed 71 members and guest Nadine Stone to our main meeting. Alison thanked greeter Dot Dunning and the usual safety and fire regulations etc. were stated.
Chair:
The newly completed and approved Looe u3a Financial Policy was announced with copies available on the information board, in the policy file on the table and also on the website. Alison thanked Treasurer Rob Nevshehir for his work with her to produce the document, based on the standard u3a format.
Our 2024-2025 programme is still available and a copy is on our website.
Events
The trip to the immersive dome experience in Plymouth was deemed a great success. And there are photos of the visit on our website.
Other events promoted were the Spanish evening, The backstage tour at the Theatre Royal and a trip to Looe Valley Winery.
Groups:
Talks are continuing for the location of the proposed walking netball group, Liskeard sports centre would charge £56 per hour.
The garden safari group leader promoted the latest copy of Gardner’s World which is offering ticket discounts.
The initial world food and drink group was very successful with more meetings being planned.
Community News:
There is a lunch arranged at St Martins hall, by the Church, for 27th April, cost £5 per person.
Age Concern are organising a coach trip to Sidmouth for 23rd April, cost £15 per person.
Cinema By the Sea is showing the film ‘The Zone of Interest’ on 17th April, cost £5 per person.
The Old Cornwall Society next meeting will have a guest speaker talking on China Clay in Cornwall.
The speaker today was Pete English who spoke on the history of greyhounds and greyhound racing. He brought along 4 greyhounds and numerous mementoes. This was an informative and interesting presentation with numerous questions from members.

Alison reminded members that the next main meeting on May 8th will be Groups’ Showcase, where several Looe u3a groups would be performing. These include Recorders, Tunes in the Afternoon and Ukuleles.
