Minutes of the Main Meeting 14th January, St Martin’s Hall, beginning at 10am.
In her capacity as temporary Acting Chair, Chris opened the meeting by wishing everyone a Happy New Year, and welcoming all attending, including 3 new members.
Chris advised members of Health and Safety Issues, including Fire Safety, Evacuation procedures and defibrillator location
Chair’s News
With our u3a AGM being held in February. Members were asked to consider whether they would like to join our team. Nomination forms should be submitted to us by the end of this week. All members should expect to receive an email shortly providing information of nominations, proposals, the AGM Agenda, and minutes of last year’s AGM.

‘Scottish Night’ – Saturday 31st January 2026. Scottish Piper, Singing, and a traditional hot Scottish supper. £10 per person.
Chris asked for some assistance with setting up the hall for the event – to arrive 6.30pm.
Next Month (February)
Coach trip to Devonport Heritage Centre – Tuesday 17th March Offering a guided tour of the Heritage Centre, followed by lunch at Royal William Yard (members to make own lunch arrangements). Coach home should arrive at Looe by approx. 4.30pm.
Defibrillator & First Aid Training. Date has been set for training by the South West Ambulance Trust. Thursday 12th March. 2.00pm – 4.00pm at Looe Bowling Club. Signup sheet available for those who wish to attend.

New Art Group – A form is available on front table for any member interested.
Garden Safari – Barbara Leckinformed members that trips will be resumed as there is now a driver available.
Proposed Writing Group – Marian Cole informed members of a new writing group she is offering to organise in her own home, writing memoirs using words, photographs, or pictures, of their life-story. This can be for their own reasons, or for family members, children etc. Starting Thursday 12th February. 10.30 – 12.30. Initially this is proposed for a six-week period, but there is flexibility on times, dates etc. depending on members requirements. A signup sheet was made available
Community News
Cinema by the Sea – Next film, showing Wednesday 21st January @ 7.30pm – ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’. Tickets available online or cash on the door, £5.
Looe Community Players – pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Performances 22nd – 24th January @7.00pm, including a matinee on 24th @ 2.00pm. Tickets available online. £8 per adult, £4 per child.
Community Lunch – St. Martin’s Hall. Saturday 24th January. Soup and dessert with hot drink, £5.
Digital Skills Training – Chris announced the opportunity for older members to develop their computer skills using training offered by AbilityNet (sponsored by BT). This can be offered as one-to-one training in their own home, small group training with u3a members (own home) or as a single session organised by the u3a at an external venue. Signup sheet available for those interested.
NHS – Google ‘Healthy Choices’ Quiz – Chris informed members of the opportunity to access the quiz to gain suggestions for a healthy lifestyle.
Speaker
Today’s speaker was from ‘Cornwall Hospice Care’ giving us a sensitive and caring insight into the work of the Hospice in their homes in St. Austell and Hayle.
Next Month – AGM – Looe Mayor, Cllr Stephen Remington. ‘State of the Nation’ talk – an update on plans for Looe & the surrounding area for the coming year.
