Main Meeting June 2024

Minutes of the Main Meeting, Wednesday 12th June, 2024, St. Martin’s Hall, beginning at 10am.

The Chair, Alison Currah, welcomed all to the meeting including recently joined members Clive and Liz Dunstan.

Dot Dunning and Marilyn King were thanked as Greeters and the usual safety and fire regulations given.

Chair

Alison began by informing the meeting of the sad loss of Looe & District u3a Secretary Laurie Watson. As she praised Laurie for his commitment and service to L & D u3a, a few photos were shown, and funeral arrangements given.

With the untimely passing of the Secretary, the Chair appealed to members to consider standing for Committee to fill the 3 vacancies. She explained that volunteers could be co-opted at any time. She also reiterated that in February, she and several of the committee would be standing
down and replacements would need to be found to keep the organisation running.

Promotional flyers for L&D u3a have been produced and the Chair asked for members to help with their distribution to Looe and other villages.

Tickets were on sale for:

Friday July 12th – Looe Vineyard, 2pm. Tour and wine tasting.

Wednesday August 7th – CERC (Cornwall Energy Recycling Centre) visit, Guided tour, 2pm.

Wednesday August 14th – Summer Feast, St. Martin’s Hall, from 12 noon.

Thursday August 29th – Murder Mystery Trip, Bodmin Steam Railway.

Groups News

Alison explained that she was the new designated person for the Wild Swimming group and asked interested members to sign up so further arrangements could be made.

Paula Roy, for the Garden Safari group, promoted the trip to castle Drogo on Wednesday 3rd July.

The Chair then shared a list of new group ideas that had been suggested at the New Members’ Welcome Meeting. She urged people to sign up showing their preferences so connections between like-minded people could be made to get new groups off the ground.

Community News:

The new ‘Wasson’ Community publication, detailing events in Looe over the month of June, was displayed. Printed copies were available

The Made in Looe Regatta was mentioned for the coming weekend.

Cinema By the Sea will be showing the film ‘Wicked Little Letters’ on Wednesday 19th June.

The Old Cornwall Society (Peter King) were offering places on a boat trip on Monday 17th June.

St. Martin’s Strawberry Fayre, Saturday 24th June, St. Martin’s Hall, 12 – 3pm was advertised.

Alison reminded members that at the Main Meeting on Wednesday July 10th the speaker would be Ian Gasper with a short history of ‘The Silk Roads’ following trips to Armenia, Iran & Uzbekistan.

The raffle was drawn.

Following coffee, the Speaker Tony Smith, gave an
informative presentation about the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. A
donation was made to the CWGC.
