Minutes of the Main Meeting 14th September, St Martin’s Hall, beginning at 10am.
The Chair, Steve, welcomed everyone to the Meeting with the usual health and safety briefing and a reminder about the suggestion box if anyone should wish to use it.
Chair’s News
Steve told those present that he would be sending out an email to all members following the meeting with details relating to his presentation. He repeated his request to members wishing to contribute to his PowerPoint for meetings, to submit those by the first Friday of each month.
He reminded members about the u3a Facebook page and website and said that new identity cards were available. For safety, he asked members to carry these when attending any u3a event. He also urged members to ensure that the contact on their cards was someone who was immediately contactable and not a relation who lived away.
Copies of the new Third Age Matters magazine were available for members to borrow. Steve also informed members that ‘Discovery Days’ could be accessed online from the National u3a website.
The Chair repeated the information about the proposed new ‘Lunch Club’ organised by member Caroline Petherick.
Steve told the membership that the lease on the Methodist Hall & Family Hub on Pendennis Road, Barbican, will run out in May 2027. This lease costs £30,000 to renew and whilst Looe Town Council do not wish to lose the asset and are prepared to put money towards that cost, they are keen to find out how local people currently use the hall and what they would like to see it used for in the future to make sure it is worth keeping. To this end, they have devised a survey for local residents which Steve said he would circulate for those interested to complete online.
The Speaker for November, Tony Rae talking about the Great British Sewing Bee, has postponed until January ’27. Members will be informed of the new speaker when a booking has been confirmed.
