Minutes of the Main Meeting 8th July, St Martin’s Hall, beginning at 10am.
The Chair, Steve, welcomed everyone to the Meeting. He gave the usual safety and health and safety briefing and a reminder about the suggestion box if anyone should wish to use it.
Chair’s News
Steve began by announcing the passing of one of Looe & District u3a’s members, Kate Whittington. At 98 she was still an active member attending many events and was described by the local ‘Hash Harriers’ as a ‘lovable’ character. She had still been running with them into her early 90’s. Iris Ward gave a tribute to her telling of how Kate had enjoyed taking part in the drama group taking on some of the lively and, at times, more ‘racy’ roles. She ended by voicing the feelings of many by stating that Kate would be missed.
The Chair announced that last month’s speaker from ‘Cornwall Search Dogs’ had thanked our group for donations totalling £235. This, they said, had made up for the cancellation of the last day of the Royal Cornwall Show.
Steve asked any members wishing to contribute to the PowerPoint presentation for meetings if they could submit those by the first Friday of each month.
He reminded members about the u3a Facebook page and website and said that new identity cards were available. For safety, he asked members to carry these when attending any u3a event.
In Groups’ News, Steve reported that after 11 years, Chris Barwell was giving up her role as leader of the Tunes in the Afternoon Group’. Group member, Marilyn King, thanked Chris for her years of service, moving the group from ‘Sing at Seven’ to its present ‘Tunes…’. She presented her with a bouquet on behalf of the group. Chris said that she hoped someone would take the role on and continue the fun and music. She also thanked Fiona Sneyd for her accompaniment on her keyboard.
The Garden Safari Group will be visiting Lanjeth Water Gardens on Sunday 19th July.
Steve drew members’ attention to the tables at the front of the hall that displayed archive photographs. As there would be no room to store these now, members were encouraged to help themselves to any that had a personal connection. These would be shown again at the Summer Lunch.

Steve reminded members that there would be no Speaker next month as it would be our Summer Lunch.
Refreshments were then served.
Following a coffee break,the Speaker from Coastwatch, gave a most interesting and informative talk about their work at Rame Head to keep seafarers and water users safe.
