WEDNESDAY 13th MARCH 2024 at 10 a.m.
ST. MARTINS COMMUNITY HALL, EAST LOOE.
Chair, Alison Currah, welcomed a packed hall to the monthly meeting with 90 people attending. Welcoming 8 new members who were attending for the first time: Sharon Cotton, Jo Groves, Patrica (Paddy) Hunter, Melanie Lamont, Sara Page, Nicky and Roger Thornhill and John Whipps and guest Norma Knight.
Alison thanked greeters Dot Dunning, Peter and Marilyn King and car park steward Linda Harwood. The usual safety and fire regulations etc. were stated.
Chair:
The new programme has been issued today, with PDF versions sent out to members. There is a full list of events, speakers and committee members. Presentations were made as thanks to Dot Dunning and Jackie Pritchard for their work on the layout and printing respectively.
Alison said that subs for membership were overdue with a cut off at the end of March.
There is a vacancy on the committee for a speaker secretary plus one other. Anyone interested in joining the committee would be welcomed, not necessarily with portfolio and anyone could be co-opted during the year. Several of the committee are obliged to stand down at the next AGM due to the constitution limitations on length of continuous service.
Events
Tickets were on sale for the Immersive Dome experience in Plymouth, the Spanish evening and visit behind the scenes at Theatre Royal, Plymouth.
Groups:
It is proving difficult to find a suitable venue for the proposed walking netball group. Any members who may know of a location would be helpful.
The new World Food & Drink group is full this month but please keep in touch if interested.
Also, there is a waiting list for the Garden Safari group trip to Caerhays Castle. The Gorgeous Grub group currently has vacancies.
Unless rehearsing for a performance the Monday Ukulele group will now be meeting fortnightly.
Immediately after the meeting there was a thank you lunch for the group leaders with a briefing on insurance, risks and financial records within their groups.
Community News:
Alison advised of the Wasson publication promoting events taking place in Looe and the surrounding area in the Looe Town Council noticeboards and website. A copy is on our information board.
St Martin’s Church is planning a refurbishment of the hall, especially the kitchen area and plans have already been drawn up for this. Anyone who can advise on sources of funding would be appreciated.
The next viewing of Cinema by the Sea at Looe Community Centre will be next Wednesday and the film is Barbie.
The committee always appreciate members feedback so please leave any comments in the suggestion box.
The speaker for next month will be Pete English who will be speaking on the history of greyhounds and greyhound racing.
Following the raffle and coffee break Mike Griffiths gave a very enlightening and well researched talk on ‘Listening to the Enemy, war comes to a Cornish village’.
Alison asked for support for our raffles as the income helps to off-set our refreshment costs.
The next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday 10th April.
